Based on the original work by Eiichiro Yonei, titled “Shitamehan’s Underlaying Materials”, Kansai Tatsumi adapted it into a film. It was a masterpiece that won several film awards that year. It represents the early period of Nihonkou Romantic Porn films. During the Taisho 7 years, there were frequent incidents related to the US situation. The film begins with scenes where the geisha Saezoe gets excited during her first meeting with Shinji. There are also various other episodes interspersed throughout the film. Geisha Hanae explains how to behave at the bedside to Shinji. There’s also a love story between the geisha Toshi and a soldier. And then there’s the incident where Pinzo, who plays the drum player, commits suicide in a room. All these events happen at different times, but the only thing that happens at the same time is Saezoe and Shinji’s relationship. This unique structure makes this film worth watching.
