The bedroom of the widow

The elderly novelist, Shinzo, who was now wheelchair-bound, stayed in a local inn with Sakai from his publishing company, in order to continue his writing. The inn was managed by two women: Reiko, a widow, and Aki, the wife of Shōshū. Reiko’s husband had committed suicide, and Shōshū had also disappeared without a trace. Shinzo was fascinated by Reiko’s beauty and her mysterious, dark past. There was a “closed room” in the inn, and every evening around six o’clock, there were strange noises coming from there. One day, Aki’s brother attacked Reiko. Sakai witnessed this and, the next day, he approached Reiko and made love to her. She told him that not only her husband, but also her former lover had committed suicide. Every evening, they would call her to the closed room. A few days later, Shōshū returned. He said that since childhood, he couldn’t bear the incest between Reiko and Shōshū, and he began to have nightmares. A few hours later, at six o’clock, Sakai saw Shinzo missing from his room.
